Guide for westerners who want to travel to Jiuzhaigou independently
The nature park of Jiuzhaigou itself is made up of many different scenic spots – from rapids and waterfalls to still turquoise lakes, all set off by rocky, towering gorges and pine-covered hills. Once you’re there, you begin to understand why mountains and seas feature so prominently in Chinese art – even Zhang Yimou’s swordplay film "Hero" was shot there.
The park is beautiful and extremely well-kept, with nicely built walkways throughout and buses to hop on and off of, but as my well-traveled aunt surmised, “It’s nothing to die for, compared to Montreal in the fall or to Iguazu Falls.” We saw the odd wild pheasant roaming around, and a few birds, but no other wildlife. Quite packed during peak season (October) but that is the best time to watch the foliage turn.
WARNINGS:
The Jiuzhaigou Valley nature park is still largely a tourist destination intended for domestic Chinese tourists, and as such, it may seem pretty idiosyncratic in its organization to foreign tourists (ie. lack of proper toilet facilities, lack of maps at each bus-stop, lack of signs in English.) SEE BELOW for MORE:
1. There is a mad rush for the internal, park-operated buses once you're inside the park's gates. It's the only way to get around, unless you intend to navigate the gigantic park on foot (not advisable). The buses are plentiful, but the Chinese tour groups love to push. Just be prepared and don't be too frazzled by their lack of common courtesy. However, once on the buses, the tourguides are young, personable and very helpful at crowd control.
2. The other main thing is that the tours are only conducted in Mandarin Chinese and unless you are fluent in it, their commentaries will be worthless. That said, you won't really need much commentary for scenery like that. It's self-explanatory.
3. Getting out of the park can be tricky, if you do not have a map of the place. (The park had run out during my visit in mid Oct, 2005, its peak season). We spent TWO HOURS trapped on several wrong buses trying to get out from the main bus station and food court/rest area in the middle of the park, because of inadequate signage and directions from indifferent park employees stationed on the ground. Finally, we got to the sole, CORRECT bus stop for the bus that takes you back to the entrance/exit of the mammoth park -- NOTE THIS: it is the one at the lowest end of the food court/main bus station area. There will be NO SIGN in English (or Chinese) that tells you any of this clearly. They assume that most tourists will be traveling with their own tour guide who would hustle you in the appropriate direction. Also note -- this bus will not take you straight to the exit. You will have to switch buses YET AGAIN at a stop that features a Tibetan village, complete with knick-knack shops!
